Tripalium 4: The Putrefied Issue. HUMAN MASTICATION

Interview with Gee and a few insights from Rodney (2004)

First off how's everything in Davao??? What keeps the band busy nowadays?
Gee: Everything is fine!!! We are busy on practicing and arranging some of our new songs for our upcumming release.

Your old drummerRodney is back after more than a year. Tell us about his return. Who convinced him to come back?
Gee: Yes, Rodney is back more than a year!!! When Gian left the band, we immediately convinced him to fill the drumkit!!!

Rodney, how's it like to have back in Human Mastication fold? How serious are you this time? Do you still consider you hardcore band as your main band?
Rodney: Actually, my hardcore band is already dissolved two years ago! Anyway, I'm pretty welcome to be back in Human Mastication. And it's great because we are friends and I'm doing positive to this band.

What about the departure of Gian? Had there been any conflict of interest between Gian and the rest of the band knowing that he's from a black metal band?
Gee: No! There's no conflict with Gian and the rest of the band. We don't care if he had a Black Metal band... Every people have a different interest, tastes and wants.... So why should we!!?? Today, I have another Brutal Death Metal band with Gian... called NOSFERATU. Watch out!!!

Gian played drums on your demos. When exactly did he left?
Gee: I can't remember the exact date he left. I think after 2 or 3 months after we record our 6 songs. I'm not sure!!!

Rodney, you are one of the founding members of the band and yet you failed to contribute in the recording department because you left. How does it feel whenever you are playing Human Mastication materials that Gian have recorded?
Rodney: It doesn't matter to play Human Mastication that Gian have recorded as long as we are going forward as a band.

What can you say about Gian's drumming on the demos?
Rodney: He's doing a great job!

The songs off the new demo are much longer and have less grind references but have more death riffs compared to the first one. Tell us about these changes.
Gee: Yes, there's a lot of changes between our old and new songs... Our new songs are not same as fast in our old songs... The new songs are more into death riffs, tons of groove parts and sicker vox! This time, we don't want to play too fast musick... we want to lessen the grinding and fast parts. And create more groove/catchy riffs to make move your fuckn' tight ass!!! But we still have more grinding assault in our new songs!!!

Does the amount of riffs per song have to do with the length of the songs as well?
Gee: No! The amount of riffs doesn't matter. It depends!!! But as much as possible, we should create tons of riffs in every song to lengthen it!

And although I haven't read the lyrics, judging by the song titles the themes have changed as well.
Gee: Yes, our lyrics are into slightly political stuffs...

The production still needs much improvement, it sounds better than your debut demo. Where did you record the new demo and who helped you out this time?
Gee: We recorded at Polyfusion Studio. We raised our own money to produce enough funds for the demo. We thought it was essential to record our new material at that time so that we could send promo stuffs to interested labels, webzines/zines etc...

You now handle the distribution of the new promo. Is Davao Death no longer interested in helping you out?
Gee: I don't know! It's not that they are entirely uninterested I think! I'm not sure! Just ask Boyet of Davao Death Metal! He can answer your question.

What's up with the upcoming split CD with Austria's Rotten Cold? How did the deal happen? I believe the materials on Promo 2003 will be on this split CD.
Gee: We have a Split release with Rotten Cold... It will be released under Malaysian label Reverb prod. The release date is July 2004. This Split CD contains 6 songs from us. And the 3 of this are in our promo...

And you're also planning to record a full length before the year ends. How is it going? How many new songs have you written so far?
Gee: We already finished 8 songs and we planning to record 8-9 songs. We record it before September. Hopefully, we could have everything done before the year ends.

Will the new songs be in the same vein as the tracks off the promo 2003 or do you new ideas up your sleeve for the album?
Gee: Yes! Same vein in songs of our new promo...

Will there be any re-recording of the 5 original tracks that you've already released?
Gee: Yes! We will re-record our 5 old songs and an additional of our 4 new songs.

What about cover songs?
Gee: We don't have cover songs!

Speaking of cover songs, it's often said by many bands that they are doing covers to pay homage to their heroes but sometimes I see them as a lure for the listener to check them out. What's your take on that?
Gee: Yes! It's not bad if you do cover songs... That is pretty normal! You do that because you have favorite songs from your favorite bands. But it's not good if all you have played are cover songs. That is gay!!! "Show band". You should create your original material and show them what you got!

You're often mistaken as a gore band mainly because of the deep gurgled vox. How do you react to that?
Gee : Hahaha!! Yes... Many zines and bands saying that we are a gore band. We don't care! This is not a big deal for us... That is their opinion! No problem about that!!!

Speaking of gore, how do you feel every time you watch the evening news and you hear and see nothing but death and gore flashing in full color on your TV?
Gee : It looks good!!! Hehehe! Just kidding! We have nothing to do with these killings. No one can stop this I think! Philippines is very poor country. Right!? And they forced to kill people because of our economic status. They do that for money!!!

If you were to judge the rapists in our prisons, particularly those who rapes their own daughters, and minors (pedophiles), what would be their sentence and how would you justify it?
Gee : Kill them brutally!!! But we must torture them first before they die... Hahaha!!! They should be punished and tortured 1,000 times to pay what they have done.

Davao's massive ripping off of foreign and local bands and labels kinda slowed down lately. Do you have any idea what happened?
Gee : I don't have any idea about this... This is not my bands business anymore...

Finally, what's your take on bootlegging underground records, which I've been told is now rampant in Davao? Of course there's no denying that the same thing is happening in Manila.
Gee : Yes! I know that! They do this because it is cheaper than the original one... And people may buy this stuff because original CD's are very expensive... You know that! I don't want to give a shit about this!!! This is not my business!!!

Thanx guys for your time and I wish you all the best. Final words are yours.
Gee:Thanks for your support and killer interview!!! Good luck to your zine and Keep it sick!!! To all Brutal Death freaks interested in keeping touch with us... feel free to write us and visit our website.
